The charming San Vito Lo Capo is a seaside resort town, set on the Sicilian coast. The town combines rich history with fine leisure facilities and a lovely bay beach stretching from the town to the foot of Mount Monaco. Nearby is to be found an old tuna station, which has not been in operation since the 17th century. The area, and particularly the sanctuary of St Vito, was a popular site for pilgrims in the past. The temple was constructed in the 13th century on the remains of a historic chapel and was later fortified. The number of the towers around are purposely built. They were used to signal when hostile boats were approaching. Among the other attractions in the area are some historic grottoes, which have been used as warehouses in the past. They feature some interesting engravings, which according to the scientists date back to the Palaeolithic era.
